Computer stuck updating windows

Left it for another hour and tried a hard turn off (pushing my power button). The only thing I can think of now is to take the battery out.... At this point it still says "11 out of 27..." After a few minutes my screen does go black....

I wouldn't refresh unless you have to, I get a little tired of listening to that as a first option, especially to a known issue in Windows 8.

I'm a little irritated it's included because people with no idea of what to do use it and realize it uninstalls a lot of programs.

Now when you restart, before you start patching again go to Windows Update hangs when downloading or installing updates and run the update troubleshooter (under Windows 8 section).

I have periodic trouble which it always fixes which makes it perfect to run straight before updates. On one hand, it's a good thing that Refresh is available for use when the system is truly in trouble, it's something that's been needed.

As has been my practice for many years, back to Windows 3.1, about every six months I wipe my hard drive and reinstall everything.
